Guide

A journal you can keep up with.

Backward is a free one-line-a-day journal for iPhone and iPad. Write a single line about today, and every year that line comes back on the same date, next to your photos and music from that day.

Why one line works.

Most journals feel intimidating: a blank page, every night, forever. One line is small enough to actually do, even on a day when nothing happened.

What to write.

Say what you did, how you felt, or write about that tiny thing you’d otherwise forget. “Went to the farmers market for peaches. Came home with flowers and no peaches.” That counts.

It adds up.

Each line comes back on the same date next year, stacked with the ones before it. A few years in, every date reads like a short story about you.

Your notes stay yours.

No account and no ads. Notes and streaks sync through your own iCloud account across your devices if you enable it.

Questions, answered.

How long is a one-line journal entry?

One line. A sentence about your day is plenty. The point is to keep it small enough that you’ll do it every day.

Can I read my old entries?

Yes. Each entry comes back on the same date every year, shown with the entries from earlier years on that date.

Where are my journal entries stored?

In Backward on your device, and in your own iCloud account if you turn on sync. They aren’t sent to a server I run.

One line. Every day. That’s it.

Backward is free on iPhone and iPad.
