Ordinalist: making indecision useful
A music-ranking app with a strong brand voice. I built Ordinalist, gave it a cheeky personality, ran a public beta program, and then launched the thing.
- I built it
- I designed it
- I wrote it
- I launched it
The short versionBuilt, branded, beta tested, and launched an app. Please download and give it 5 stars.
The decision
Ranking 40 songs in a list is miserable. Choosing between two is easy. So I decided Ordinalist would only ever ask the easy question, this song or that one, and do the math to turn those answers into one complete ranking.
My contribution
While I did everything related to creating and testing the product, my favorite part of Ordinalist is the sassy, slightly bitchy, branding. It started as an exercise to keep honing my writing skills and turned into my favorite part of the brand. Ordinalist is that friend and you just can’t help but love them.
What changed
Ordinalist launched free on the App Store with no tiers or upsells. Next to Backward it shows range: same person behind both, two very different brands that each have to hold up on their own.
The work.
